What is CPC Training and Why Do You Need It?
If you want to drive a heavy-duty vehicle for a living, then, under a new European Union Directive, you need to hold a CPC qualification alongside your vocational driving licence. This qualification, otherwise known as a Certificate of Professional Competence, ensures that only highly skilled personnel can drive these heavy-duty vehicles. In turn, this increases safety in the industry and on the roads.
Employers are legally required to only hire drivers that possess this CPC qualification and to make sure they renew it every five years. As such, if you want to drive lorries over 3.5 tonnes and minibuses with 9 seats or more, it’s essential you undertake CPC driver courses from Dorset Driver Training.
Who Needs to Undertake CPC Courses?
Restrictions and requirements are different for various drivers depending on when they passed their driving test. If you passed your car test before January 1997 and have a C1 or 7.5 tonne entitlement, you don’t need to take the CPC initial qualification. For those who passed after this date and are using their licence for work will need to take the CPC driver courses.
Any drivers who obtained their LGV licence before September 2009 and wants to drive for a living, needs to complete the Periodic Training. Those who obtained their LGV licence after this date has 5 years to complete 35 hours periodic training from the completion date of the initial qualification.
